The story I'd like to share with you is about my bad boy Sir Fredic, otherwise known as Freddie.  In early October, I lost my beloved husband after a gallant 1 1/2 year battle with lung cancer.

It was very rough on me and all our children, but our oldest stepdaughter had an especially hard time with it as she was so devoted to her father.

About two weeks after he passed, I drove to South Carolina to spend a few days with her and her family to have a chance for a special talk with her.  That Saturday, she and her two daughters took me to a huge flea market.  After about 3 hours of walking though many rows and rows of stuff, we were on the last aisle, at the last booth on the left, when we came upon this adorable red, short-haired, dappled minitature dachsund.  My 11 year old granddaughter just went gago over him as they have a long-haired, white, brown and black dachsund. She said ,"Grandma, you need a dog!"  I could barely sputter my reply, "I don't need a dog and I don't want a dog.  I've never had a dog! They chew up stuff and mess in the house. They bark and I travel too much to have to worry about a dern dog." Of course, all the while this darling little fellow just rested his head on his front paws and looked at me with his beautiful hazel eyes. Now, I need to mention that I have auburn hair and hazel eyes and always wanted a child or grandchild to take after my coloring.  It seemed like destiny!  It took about ten minutes for me to resist and then I just helplessly looked at the lady and said, "Just get together everything I'll need for him."

All the way home from South Carolina to Lakeland, Fl. I looked at that dog, wondering what I had let myself in for. I remembered a conversation my husband and I had about six months before he passed. He mentioned that if we ever got a dog, he would like one like the short-haired red doxie they had when Cheryl (my SC stepdaughter) was a little girl. And yes, Freddie does all the things I predicted and then some. He chews up my shoes, tears my knee highs, messes in the house (although that is getting better) and wants to play when I am extremely tired and just want to sleep! He has chewed a hole in my new sheet set and ate a small piece of my hardwood floor. But in return he has given me endless hours of loving and is great entertainment and company.

The entire family has bonded with him and I am very grateful to Bad Girl Mona and Bad Boy Jon for puppysitting many hours while I am teaching. Jon even kept him for me when Mona and I went to Albuquerque and I think they got along just fine (although Jon drew the line at letting him sleep under the covers with him!!) They say God works in strange ways and it certainly seems that way. I can't think of another thing that would have eased and comforted me at this time the way Freddie has managed to do. It was destiny! Freddie may be nicknamed Bad Boy Freddie but he has been a blessing in disguise!
