Featherweight Quilters treasure antique Singer Featherweight sewing machines…both for their portability and simplicity. Weighing only 11 pounds, they are great to take to classes and workshops. With no complicated computer inside, they are easy to operate and maintain.
Its a party this featherweight is 52 The women of my family became Featherweight slap-happy a couple of years ago. Bad Girl Elaine (my mother) purchased a beautifully maintained model from a friend that included the original invoice, user’s guide, and lots of accessories. My 21-year-old budding quilter daughter and I immediately jostled for “Post-it rights.” That’s the family tradition of putting a post-it note on something you hope to inherit one day (a throwback to the TV show “Gilmore Girls”…for any fans out there). As I was preparing my supplies to attend a guild workshop, I lamented to my husband that my computerized machine is so heavy and I wish I had been the one to purchase the much envied Featherweight. He asked me why I didn’t just go to eBay and buy one for myself. A few hours later, I was the successful bidder on my own machine! However, I was disappointed when it arrived. Yes, the flaws the seller had mentioned were indeed present in the machine. But there were additional things wrong with the machine such as a missing bobbin holder. Thankfully, a family member knew a local man who collects and works on Featherweights and after he worked his magic, it is in impeccable condition. Thank you, Jimmy!
I named my machine Annabelle and curious about her manufacturing date, I called the Singer Company. By simply reading them the serial number found on the machine, they can tell you the manufacturing date and plant. It’s not really the “birthdate” but probably as close as you will get. It’s actually the day that a large series of numbers was released from the head office to various factories. You can get this information by calling 1-800-4SINGER if you live in the USA.
While attending a family reunion, Elaine learned that her brother had a Featherweight stashed in his closet and she purchased it from him for Lauren. He shipped it when he got home and lo and behold, it was a Centennial edition! After another amazing refurbishment by Jimmy, Lauren was the proud recipient of her own machine for her 21st birthday!
We’d love to hear your Featherweight story. Please share it with us and all the other Bad Girls. |
