Cotton Theory

I was watching sewing with nancy on PBS..and she had a guest on that made quilts in a total differnt way it is called Cotton Theory Quilting.....Quilt First=Then Assemble it allows you to quilt pieces individually and assemle them into reverisible quilts!! I thought that this was a great idea!!! I bought everything that i need ..But I just can't seem to get started.. So if anyone out there has heard ,or has done this maybe you can get me started...!

I also watched that program but had already seen a demonstration of this technique, I have also purchased all the stuff and books needed, but no I have not done it yet either. It would be a great way to do a quilt as it is done all at once. I hope you have fun with it. Nonna

I was at quilt market with a friend a few years ago when she first showed this technique. I was thrilled that there was a way to do a quilt, have it all done AND have it reversable. I purchased her video on it, brought it home and viewed it a couple of times and have never attempted to do a quilt from this process.

I know of a couple of ladies that did do a small quilt and they said it seemed to take a long time. However, you should keep in mind that making a quilt top, putting it together-basting or pins, hand or machine quilting it....that all takes a LONG time to do. I always thought I would try this technique in doing a table runner first....then see just how much I like it BEFORE trying it out on a large quilt.

Wouldn't this be the same technique as "quilt as you go?"

Jackie,
That was going to be my question.....I learned quilt as you go when I first learned to quilt.....it was easier for our instructor to teach us to hand piece and hand quilt in a few class sessions rather than trying to quilt an entire top....also it taught me the value and transportability of hand work. Quilt as you go does seem to take longer...but I am not sure it is any slower than any other type of quilting...
Okay...but the question still stands...is this technique the same as quilt as you go?

I did not see the program and I think I know what you are all talking about but not sure. What is the name of the book and her name. I think I might purchase it and see what you are talking about. It all sounds at the very least, interesting!

Hi all,

I too saw The Sewing with Nancy show with Cotton theory quilting. The December/January 2008 issue of Country Woman magazine also had an article about Betty Cotton and her "Cotton Theory" method. There's an adorable table runner in the magazine, too. It also gives information on where to find out more.
