Elm Creek Quilts by mburtz 2 Years, 7 Months ago Is anyone else a fan of Jennifer Chiaverini's books...the Elm Creek Quilts? I'm an avid reader and I get so excited when she has a new book coming out. Unfortunately, my favorite authors can't write as fast as I can read!
I love the way she weaves the present with the past. She does a great job describing why the heritage of quilting is so important. Besides Jennifer, my three favorite authors are Rosamund Pilcher, Maeve Binchey, and Jan Karon. I am a frequent library visitor and I've finally learned that if a book isn't good (to me) in the first chapter or two, it's okay to set it aside and not finish it! In the past, I've always thought hey, it might get better...and it rarely did! What's your favorite author/book? "Bad is the new Good!"

by biancatom 2 Years, 7 Months ago I like her books too. I should say I don't read her books, I listen to them. Mostly when I am quilting. I just find audiobooks very relaxing.

Re:Elm Creek Quilts by quiltingsue 2 Years, 7 Months ago Jennifer's "Elm Creek Quilts" series is one of my favorites. I, also, like Sally Goldenbaum's "Queen Bee Mystery" Series. There are 3 books in the series and she is suppose to be working on the 4th book but I have been waiting for over a year for it to come out. They are about a quilt bee that always seems to get drug into solving a (light) murder mystery.

Re:Elm Creek Quilts by Jessica 2 Years, 7 Months ago Hi, I love those books...I have read three or four of them and my Mom is buyin gthem for me as she can find them. I love the way she moves from the past and present and how so much of it is about reconciliation and family and friends. It always inspires me to sew and quilt more. Reading about how these women find time in their busy days to put in a stitch or two.....I know they are fictional....but it is nice to excapr for a while.

Re:Elm Creek Quilts
by threads 2 Years, 7 Months ago I was never much of a reader until about a year ago. My mother always had 2 or 3 books going all the time. She said that someday she hoped that I would take an interest in it. Well, I did. My favorite authors are Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs. Along with Jennifer C. I just finished the 3rd book in the Lakeshore Chronicles by Susan Wiggs and when I completed the book, I found that there is another one in the series availble in Feb. Only have to wait a few days, instead of a few months, as you usually do when you are reading a series. In between books, I quilt.

Re:Elm Creek Quilts by Fiona 2 Years, 7 Months ago I love her books. Though I suspect some of history is totally fictional, I find that weaving of the modern day with the past quite nice. It helps me find the confidence in my skills. I just wish there were more writers like her, I'm not into mysteries. Has any one found any other quilt fiction that wasn't a mystery?
I'm definitely a reader. I read every night right before bed. My daughters literally grew up going to the library as a family outing. As a young mother, story time at the library meant I could relax and read for about an hour while knowing my children were being safely entertained. It also meant that they were exposed to many great readers and books. Now they have so many books, my husband and I bought them each a new bookshelf for Christmas. Fiona

Re:Elm Creek Quilts by Jessica 2 Years, 7 Months ago Fiona,
I was raised going to the library too...and so I also took my children ...what a nice way to quiet down on a summer afternoon and a great way to spend a rainy day. I love to get lost in a book. But I find that my reading always goes in spurts. I have not found any other quilitng books that are not mysteries. I really like JC's style....I like the feeling that quilting is just a part of life. I learned quilitng, knitting, crochet and sewing from my grandmother and she was always doing one of these when she wasn't reading watching baseball.

Re:Elm Creek Quilts by mburtz 2 Years, 7 Months ago I'm glad there's so many readers out there! My mother was a teacher and my brother and I grew up with our noses glued in one book or another. I remember when my brother decided to read through our whole set of encyclopedias. We could always tell which book he was on by his dinner topics...aardvarks...he was on "A"...Colorado...he was on "C"...and so on!
On Saturday, we would rush to do our chores so Mom would take us to the library and we could check out new books. Then we'd go home, make some snacks and spend the rest of the day lounging on her king-size bed reading. Those were the days! We owned so many books of our own that we made a little library and let our friends check out the books. My first job was at the local public library and I guess I will always love libraries and reading. I have ecclectic tastes but I really don't like romance novels (they're all the same to me) or sci fi (my husband's favorite). I have a special fondness for British and Irish authors...I think I like the way the words are different like "boot" instead of "trunk", "lift" instead of "elevator" etc. "Bad is the new Good!"
