I have one of these. They’re nice machines. Mine doesn’t handle heavier fabric well.
You might want to look into buying an all metal vintage machine if you’re going to sew multiple layers.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/39534111@N05] I have only used it on ripstop-like fabrics, but it is nice; i was worried about slipping but it is tight.
